AI is moving from experimental technology to mission‑critical tool. For IT professionals, this shift has already begun. SolarWinds’ 2024 IT Trends report found that 9 out of 10 IT pros are using or planning to use AI. Yet the same survey revealed that 35.6 % of organizations lack an AI ethics policy and only 43 % trust their data infrastructure to support AI workloads. Without clear strategies and governance, organizations risk stumbling into ethical lapses, security vulnerabilities and inconsistent adoption.
The risks of ad hoc adoption
The absence of strategy leads to uncoordinated “shadow AI.” Employees, eager to leverage the efficiency of AI, download unapproved tools or feed proprietary data into external services. Qualtrics’ 2025 report shows that only 53 % of managers and individual contributors trust leaders to implement AI effectively. This trust deficit can cause employees to take matters into their own hands, sidestepping corporate policies (if any exist). A high‑profile example involves organizations inadvertently exposing confidential data to AI chatbots, which may store and reuse data beyond company control.
Lack of governance also hinders scalability. Individual teams might achieve impressive results with AI, but those benefits remain siloed. Inconsistent adoption leads to duplicative efforts, redundancies and ultimately missed opportunities. Meanwhile, legal and reputational risks mount if AI deployments fail to meet evolving regulations on data privacy and algorithmic fairness.
Training as the foundation for adoption
Tools are only as powerful as the people who wield them. Yet surveys consistently show that organizations are not investing enough in training. According to BCG’s AI at Work survey, only about one-third of employees feel properly trained to use AI. Nearly half of frontline staff say they receive little to no AI training. As a result, employees may misuse tools, misinterpret AI outputs or be unable to identify biases and errors. Lack of training can also exacerbate anxiety and resistance, as people fear being replaced by technology they don’t understand.
Building a robust AI strategy
Developing a comprehensive strategy requires several components:
Define a clear vision and ethical framework. Companies must articulate why they are adopting AI and what principles will guide its use. SolarWinds’ finding that over a third of organizations lack an AI ethics policy underscores the urgency of this step. The framework should address data privacy, fairness, transparency and accountability. Regular audits can ensure adherence.
Establish governance structures. Assign accountability for AI initiatives. This may involve creating an AI council composed of representatives from IT, data, legal, HR and operations. Governance should cover model selection, data management, risk assessment, incident response and compliance with regulations.
Invest in infrastructure and data quality. Only 43 % of IT professionals in the SolarWinds survey believe their databases are ready for AI. Companies must upgrade infrastructure, implement robust data governance and ensure that data used for training is accurate and representative.
Develop comprehensive training programs. Training should be multi‑tiered, addressing both general AI literacy and role‑specific skills. For example, developers may need to learn prompt engineering and model fine‑tuning, while managers need to interpret AI outputs for decision‑making. According to Korn Ferry’s survey, 48 % of employees see training as the most important factor for adoption. Providing accessible, ongoing learning opportunities is key to empowering staff and reducing fear.
Foster a culture of experimentation and feedback. Encourage employees to test AI tools in controlled environments and share lessons learned. Create safe spaces for teams to question AI outputs, address bias and propose improvements. Transparent communication builds trust and ensures that ethical concerns are surfaced early.
Benefits of getting it right
When companies develop robust strategies and invest in training, adoption accelerates and value creation follows. Employees become more comfortable experimenting with AI, uncovering new use cases and automating repetitive tasks. Leaders gain confidence in deploying AI at scale, and customers benefit from more personalized, efficient experiences. Moreover, strong governance protects organizations from ethical missteps and helps them navigate evolving regulatory landscapes.
In short, strategy, governance and training are not optional extras; they are essential foundations. Without them, AI adoption may stall or even backfire. With them, organizations can harness AI responsibly, building trust among employees and customers while unlocking transformative potential.
