We believe innovation knows no age limit and Winston Choo, APG’s recent intern, proved exactly that. As a rising senior at Singapore American School, Winston joined our team and made a huge impact on a real-world challenge.

As the capstone to Winston's time with APG, Lindsey Duvall interviewed Winston to get his take on the experience.

Tackling a Common Problem with AI

What was your favorite project during your internship with APG Technology, and why?

Winston’s favorite project was developing the RFP and RFI prioritization platform generically called the "RFX Prioritization Platform."

"I really enjoyed applying different technologies, especially AI, to solve a real and common problem faced by the company. Collaborating with Luke, Justin, and Waqar made the experience even more valuable - I learned so much from them."

This platform wasn’t just a theoretical exercise. It was built to meet APG’s needs. Winston led most of the development and brainstorming, using a combination of AWS tools, GPT-4o-mini, and Bubble to bring the idea to life.

The problem being solved? Government entities issue RFPs and RFIs for their projects. The volume of RFX’s issued is huge, and sifting through them all is very time-consuming. Winston took on the challenge of building a platform that reviews, scores, and presents RFXs relevant to APG’s interests.

Problem-Solving in Action

Were there any challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?

Like any meaningful project, challenges popped up along the way. Winston faced design roadblocks, technical hurdles, and the learning curve of new tools. But each challenge became an opportunity.

"I worked closely with the team to troubleshoot and discuss possible solutions, which helped me grow both technically and collaboratively."

The experience underscored the value of teamwork, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration which no doubt are skills Winston will carry forward throughout his bright career.

More Than Just Tech Skills

What were your expectations going into the internship, and how did those evolve?

Initially, Winston expected a more structured role with limited autonomy. Instead, he found the freedom to explore a range of technologies independently, which turned out to be both surprising and empowering.

"I was most surprised by how kind, welcoming, and supportive Justin and Luke were. They were incredible mentors and made the entire experience extremely positive."

This mentorship and trust helped transform the internship from a résumé line into a true growth experience.

What's Next? From APG to Environmental Impact

What are you currently working on or studying? Did your internship influence the path you’ve chosen since then? If so, how?

Currently interning at A*STAR in Singapore, Winston is diving into machine learning research. He shared that he is working specifically on a federated learning model to predict methane emissions from global rice cultivation. It is an intersection of AI and environmental science which is very exciting for him.

"The internship at APG sparked a deeper interest in applying technology to areas like environmental sustainability and real-world challenges."

His long-term vision? Studying in the U.S., expanding his expertise in AI, and working on projects with real-world impact. And yes, Winston says he’d be more than happy to return to APG in the future!

Advice for Future Interns

"Be excited about the wide range of opportunities you’ll encounter - stay open-minded, curious, and ready to learn." - Winston Choo

At APG, that’s exactly the kind of mindset that fuels innovation. From industry leaders to interns, great ideas come from those willing to explore, collaborate, and think big.

Thank you, Winston, for working with APG and bringing your intelligence and can-do attitude to our company. We wish you the best this school year!
